"Maestro Arnold's masterclass in Russia was among the most beneficial courses I have ever had.  It is amazing how much he was able to teach and have me retain in just a few days. His teaching style and use of video is very unique, and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra will push you to improve quickly. The benefit of working with an orchestra this talented and responsive is that it will quickly expose flaws in your technique, and allow you to correct them very quickly. The orchestra is also among the most friendly and welcoming with which I have ever worked! I highly recommend working with Maestro Arnold."

The Masterclass

The Conducting Masterclass with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra focuses on a variety of repertoire participants can choose from. Each participant has 100 minutes of total podium time. Participating conductors are encouraged to record their sessions on video and may use their footage as promotional material. Participants have the opportunity to request uninterrupted sessions with the orchestra, and all participants have the opportunity to review rehearsal videos with Maestro Arnold. The conducting sessions take place at Mosfilm Studios. The sessions culminate in a closing concert on March 16 in the Mosfilm Studio. The repertoire for the concert will be decided during the masterclass.

Participants can choose from the following repertoire for the masterclass.

Beethoven – Symphonies 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7

Brahms – Symphonies 1, 2, 3, 4

Glinka – Overture Ruslan and Lyudmila

Prokofiev – Classical Symphony

Rachmaninoff – Symphony No. 2

Rimsky-Korsakov – Scheherazade

Shostakovich – Symphonies 1, 5, 6, 10

Tchaikovsky – Symphonies 1, 4, 5, 6

Tchaikovsky – Romeo & Juliet Overture (final version)

“The Conducting Masterclass with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra provided a perfect environment for the developing conductor to continue to refine their gestural and emotional language while on the podium. Maestro Arnold tailors his instruction to suit the individual needs of every conductor, and pushes them to reach a more involved musical experience. It was amazing to be able to focus on my specific challenges in conducting while having the opportunity to conduct a world-class orchestra that responds to every gesture that is made.

I particularly found the video review sessions helpful, as you are able to pinpoint areas of improvement, and to revisit them again on the podium. The combination of Maestro Arnold's philosophy about music making and the caliber of the orchestra playing provided an environment where you as the conductor felt comfortable to explore new techniques and emotional content. In short this Masterclass is an invaluable experience for a pre-professional conductor looking to gain valuable experience on the podium and expand their gestural and musical vocabulary.”

"The Moscow Symphony Orchestra Masterclass was life-changing. My conducting had never improved so much in just a few days. Arthur Arnold brought out the best musician in each individual student. I was encouraged to focus on the meaning of the music, rather than my technique, and gained the confidence to trust myself. The Moscow Symphony's sound was gorgeous, and the musicians gave us their 100% energies. The rapport between Arthur Arnold and the musicians was lovely and the masterclass environment was warm and friendly. I cannot recommend the Moscow Masterclass enough!"
